Lipochrome canaries with the ground colour yellow, yellow ivory, red and red ivory are divided in two more types: - Canaries with coloured wings - Canaries with white wings Basically are the white wing canaries equal as the coloured wings, except the wing and tail feathers are without any ground colour. This is a result of an inactive enzyme factor. Beak, legs and claws are also flesh coloured. The colour of the white wing canaries are the same as with the fully coloured birds, only the wing and tail feathers must be completely white (= total absence of lipochrome). The flight feathers (wings & tail) must be chalky white. To note is that white wing canaries with a red ground colour should not lose flight feathers before and during the time of exhibition. Renewable flight feathers will be coloured by the administratin of colour enhancer, which also results in points deduction. White-wing canaries must therefore be absolutely “WHITE” and not just colourless.
Breeding white wing canaries is extremely delicate such as mosaic canaries.  Such as in mosaic canaries, the same time of feeding colour enhancer is recommended, in fact from the 45th day (~ 6 weeks). Than the colour contrast of the red colour and the chalky white flight feathers will come out the best. If feeding before this time, the colourants move with the blood-flow in the wing- and tail feathers. In order to bring all young birds of different ages into a perfect appearance, all of them must first be seperated to keep the first 45 days (~ 6 weeks) without colour enhancer. This means a good preliminary planning or management (overview) in colourfeeding is required.
For purchasing of white wing canaries think about the management in your birdroom. Egg- or soft food with any addition of ingredients, which can influence the colouring of the flight are to avoid in this time. An example for that are also eggs. Eggs maybe contain colour enhancer, because of the feeding procedure. Look for special egg- or softfood for mosaic canaries. It is also offered from some companies. Also some seeds, fruits or vegetables can lead to a hint of colouring (e. g. rape seed, kale, carrots, broccoli etc.). A special seed mixture for mosaic canaries is recommended. It is important to keep the recommended tips in mind during the feeding of the young white wing canaries. After the 45 days (~ 6 weeks) the wite wing offsprings can remain together with all (= older) birds until the exhibition and can evenly supplied with colour enhancer. Further important advices for keeping of mosaic canaries as well as for the white wing canaries you can read here: What are the feeding and care requirements for Mosaic canaries?
