AVIAN GOITER

WHAT ARE THE SIGN OF AVIAN GOITER?

Generell are some symptoms similar to other diseases, what makes a determination of avian goiter difficult. If in doubt, always ask for the help of a veterinarian. The sign of abnormal function of the gland are very variable, when Goitrogenic substances act blocking the production of thyroxine, even though adequate levels of iodine are present: - Immune deficiency, which are noticeable by frequent and   various infections. - depression and lethargy (no vitality), caused of the decreased   metabolic rate of the birds is decreased - difficult or labored breathing, holding head upright to aid   breathing - respiratory abnormalities - difficulty swallowing regurgitation - singing problems in song birds, voice changes e.g. high-   pitched inspiratory sound, loss of voice, wheezing clicking   sound or an incessant “squeaking” voice, (all the symptoms   mentioned here caused through obstruction of the trachea   preventing normal passage of air) - fat deposit, weight gain, also fatty tumors especially in   budgerigars or parakeets and parrots - swelling in the neck - changes in the skin - upnormal feather growth - bad feather production in chicks - poor feather quality - baldness (a common sign in gouldian finches or canaries) - difficult moults - reproductive problems, which make itself felt in embryo   mortality and decreased hatchability (poor breeding   rate/poor fertility). - convulsions and sudden death, cause by enlarged glands   which put pressure on the heart and major vessels - vomiting - weight loss - difficulty swallowing-blockage of the crop and esophagus, so   that the food cannot pass normally
