The Calcium reserves of a Zeba Finch Scientist reported that zebra finches will deplete the calcium reserve after the 5th egg. The study showed a five-egg clutch has a total calcium requirement of 89 mg, but the total calcium reserve of a female is only 90 mg.

CANARY KEEPING AND BREEDING - PART 3: FEEDING

Lighting, Temperature & Feeding – the most important

factors for a successful Canary keeping and breeding

Part 3: Feeding in the Canaries Annual Cycle

3.0 Introduction: The nutrient requirements of the canary bird change over the year, depending on which season it is at. In the nature, the offer of food is closely related to the changing seasons, but in captivity the breeder has to control the requirements. In addition to light and temperature, the composition of food plays a main role in the control of the active and passive phases. These should be mentioned here. 3.1 Breeding season: To prepare the breeding season, egg food is already being administered at the beginning of daylight lengthening. It is recommended the following procedure:  In the first week give egg food only twice, in the second week 3 times, in the third week every 2nd day and from the 4th week then finally daily. In the week before pairing, soaked or sprouted seed can be additionally mixed into the egg food, as it contains a high proportion of natural vitamin E. A special active phase is the rearing of the young birds. There should always be enough fresh eggfood available, because the juveniles need a lot of high quality protein, many vitamins and minerals. And also for the breeding birds is a a good and sufficient feeding very important, because the time of rearing chicks is a very powerful period of wear and tear. Feeding chicks need a lot of energy, which can be supported with the best food. First from the eighth or tenth day, when the so-called thermoregulation of the chicks occurs, soaked or sprouted seed should be also given with the egg food.
3.2 Moulting season: The moulting season is as well an active phase. The canary has to renew its feathers (around 2,000). For the canary needs especially the sulfur-containing amino acids as well as minerals are important supplements at this time. Moulting is not a disease but an energy-draining process, thus a great stress for birds as they are temporarily unable to fly. The immune system is usually less strong at this time. Until end of the moulting is eggfood daily recommended. Soaked or sprouted seed and green feed, such as vegetables and green leafy vegetables should be only administered occasionally (1-2 times a week). To better build up a functioning immune system, probiotic and prebiotic substances should now be added. Canaries that end the moult without any health problems (signs of tremendous weakness or disease) have the best conditions for the next breeding season.
3.3 Resting season: The resting season is a passive phase, and is conventionally limited to a solid supply of nutrients. Eggfood is given only 2-3 times a week, or every second day some multi vitamin. But it is also a good chance to strengthen the health of birds in a natural way. Soaked and sprouted seed is only given every 2 weeks in a small amount like a treat.
