How can I determine the sex of canaries?

SEXING CANARIES

Note from the webmaster:  At the beginning of my time of aviculture I learned that a singing canary is a male and a female never sing. I often sat for hours in front of my aviary and watched my canaries. Over the years, I have got some more knowledge. I probably have until today not learned everything. Here is an overview as a canary male or female can be identify.

1. The Canary Song

Only the canary males sing a song. Young males start up from about the 6th week with the “study” of the song. In the first few days or weeks the songs of the canaries are not not complete. But the youngsters listen the old males and develop daily their songs. When young canary male start up the singing it can be seen on the bloated throat. At the beginning of the vocal training it takes only a few seconds. After 3-4 months you can hear the quality of song. Sometimes you also can listen a short “song” in the females, just trying for seconds, but this “call” is clearly distinguishable from a male song.

2. The Colour of Canaries

Males are mainly rather better in the colour than a female. In almost of the different kinds of colour canaries the males have a deeper and richer ground colour. Especially in the red and yellow lipochrom canaries and the classical melanin canaries, such as Black (Bronze), Agate, Brown and Isabel, the ground colour of the plumage is more intensive than in the females. This can be clearly seen in intensive as well as in non-intensive canaries, because the females have a more dense of frosting markings than the males. Again, there are always exceptions such as a intensive male have a lot of frosting markings, but the standard description describes, however, that intensive males no markings may have. In the Mosaic canaries the females, also called Mosaic Type1, have smaller markings than the males (Mosaic Type 2). In Type canaries the sex determination is more difficult by the colour of the plumage. The main reason is the constant mating of non-intensive and non-intensive canaries. The frosted factor or buff factor is therefore more dense yet and the sex determination by the color is not always possible.

3. The Sex Organ of Canaries

Before the sexual maturity (9 - 12 month) this method is still uncertain. From the beginning of sexual maturity the determination is with high certainty possible. The difference between  females and males is that the abdomen of a female canary is similar to the form of an egg. Clearly visible is the difference from the beginning of the breeding season. Males, however, show a certain length of the sex organ, as with other living beings. The length and the form may be different. Some experience, to reliably detect the difference, of course also belongs to this method. Again, in colour canaries is this method relatively easy and safe, than in type canaries. In type canaries it is usually difficult because of the length and fullness of the plumage. Again, it is a result of the non-intensive and non-intensive breeding of type canaries. Annually even experienced breeders make this experience again and again.

4. The Eye of Canaries

In 2013 I heard the first time in my life that the sex determination in canaries is possible by the eyes. The following reprensentation illustrates the difference. After several comparisons I am of the opinion that the sex determination of canaries is thereafter possible

Now we have a number of possibilities to distinguish a male canary from a female canary, so that an erroneous mating is impossible. Or not...?
