HISTORY OF THE

URUCUM CANARY / RED BEAK CANARY

First discovered was the phenomenon of the red beak 1992 by the breeder Mr. Maercio Serpa Laranjo from Rio de Janeiro/ Brazil. Without any connection to this new appearance in Brazil, this mutation also occurred in 2005 at the breeder Mr. Marc Lanckzweirt from Belgium. Red beak canaries also appeared at almost the same time by the Belgian breeders Mr. Wilfried Deyaert and Mr. Jozef Van Der Meeren. Unfortunately the canaries suffered from strong balance disorders. Therefore a further development of the breed was discontinued. Also a reason for this decision was the fact, that already in Brazil at that time a large number of red beak with a better health status existed. In the begin of occuring of red beak canaries in Brazil was also a high proportion of red beak canaries with motor disturbances present. But over the years, the Brazilians were able to improve the health status of the Red Beak canaries by mating red beak canaries back to normal red lipochrome canaries and selecting them strictly to a better health.
In July 2010, the first red beak canaries were presented in public for the first time by the Brazilian breeders Maerico Serpa Laranjo, Alberto Plicaro and Alvaro Blasina. The red beak canary was now named urucum canary, derived from the achiote (bixa orellana), popularly known as “urucum”. It is a shrub or small tree originating from the tropical region (South) Americas. Natives used the seeds to make red body paint and lipstick, as well as a spice. On 18 July 2013, the national recognition of the new mutation red beak, now officially called “Urucum Canary”, took place in Itabiba/Brazil.
