       “W. Hagelberg's zoologischer Hand-Atlas”

was published between 1879-1881. The second part (Part B) includes the part Aves (birds) is a collection of 285 rare bird illustrations (colour charts No. 21 - 44 as lithographs) with one for the 19th century usual description and mode of expression. Nowadays, many technical terms are no longer used or have changed. That makes a translation into the English language somewhat difficult. Please understand that the description is reproduced here in its original version of the publication, but a customized translation into the English language is planned. W[olf] Hagelberg was a German lithographer and founder of an art institution in Berlin. He produced inter alia postcards, calendars, coloring and collection books .

Lithography was for the 19th century a conventional manner of printing colour images. The term “Lithography”  is derived from the Ancient Greek language  (lithos, = meaning "stone", and graphein = meaning "to write") is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface.
In the age of digitial images and social networks, we often forget how an interested reader got good and detailed informations in the 19th century. Probably the first photography in the world was made in 1826 by Nicéphore Niépce in heliography process. In 1883, the newspaper “Leipziger Wochenzeitschrift Illustrirte Zeitung” published for the first time a rasterized picture in Germany. Between this time pictures in books or newspapers were made only in the form of drawings and special printing processes. Only in this way interested reader got an idea of the international bird life or other things. To see old descriptions and illustrations, as than our ancestors would make "a picture" of the international bird life is all the more interesting. “W. Hagelberg’s zoologischer Handatlas” is an important collection for Bird Art (Birding Art) from the international bird life in the 19th century.
