COCCIDIOSIS IN BIRDS

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of birds, caused by microscopic organism. Coccidia are small one-celled organisms (Protozoa) that multiply in the intestinal tracts of the birds. This disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces. Coccidiosis is very contagious, especially in young birds. Most birds infected with coccidia are asymptomatic; however, young or immuno- compromised birds may suffer severe symptoms. Anorexia, vomitting, dehydration and death follow the disease. Primary symptoms is diarrhea. Blood and mucous may be present, especially in advanced cases. It is  very important to practice strict sanitation. All fecal material should be removed. Clean water should be provided at all times. Most desinfectants do not work well against coccidia. Incineration of the housings and nests, also the feces, steam cleaning, immersion in boiling water or a 10% ammonia solution are the best way to kill coccidia. Mice, wild birds, cockroaches and flies can mechanically carry coccidia from one place to another. Therefore, insect and rodent control are very important in preventing coccidiosis.
