Gouldian finches prefer the tropical savanna woodland where there are open plains with tall trees, near mangroves and water. In the rainy season they migrate southwards at the “top end” of Australia and return back in the dry season. General: Gouldian finches are colourful and very social birds. They are often found in large flocks. Unique in the birdlife is the exception that only in this specie birds three different head colours was found in nature (red-headed, black-headed and yellow [orange]-headed). Black-headed Gouldian finches are the most common. About a quarter of Gouldian finches are red-headed and the yellow (orange)-headed Gouldian finches are very rare. The colour of males are more intensive than the colour of females. The plumage of females is much duller.   Most of all nests in nature are found in holes, such as termite mounds, tree hollows but also in tall grasses. The nests are generally near water. The main breeding period usually is in the last part of the rainy season, when there is plenty of food around. Gouldian finches are seed eater and prefer to feed on tall grasses rather than be on the ground. But they also like eat little insects. As well unique in the birdlife is the special courting dance of Gouldian finch males. A female lays a clutch of about 4-8 eggs. Both parents help brood the eggs during the daytime, and the female stays on the eggs at night. When the eggs hatch, both parents help care for the young. During the 20th century the numbers of Gouldian Finches have decreased. Nowadays they are classified as endangered in the wild. Their habitat has been reduced or altered and they have also been affected by parasites (air sac mites). As a pet bird Gouldian finches are one of the most popular birds.
